So what choke does everyone like? I almost always shoot a mod it works out great for me. Last year I bought a cheap full after seeing my buddy use the patternmaster extra full to reach out there and touch em. Used it a few times and its nice for those really far shots, but I try to get them in a little closer

Anyone else use those patternmasters? My buddy loves his.

I always use my mod. Never changed it unless during turkey season. It's great for the close shots and the further away shots as well. |

i have patternmaster x tended range and it works great i can reach out and touch 'em but you dont need it early in season or when you are hunting over decoys and you get'em in feet down. I still use it for the last half of season. You also have to consider the cost, they are pricey. 110 bucks!!! |

I was also looking at the pattern master xtended range. I think that if I buy it, I will only be using it for goose season to knock down those big Cans and taking some shots at snows. I hate skybusting at ducks, I like to shoot them when they have their landing gear out too! Taylor S. Fowl Play Game Calls and Fowlnation Pro Staff |

I use my kicks highflyer all the time whether shootin skeet, doves, or waterfowl. I think it is good to practice with whatever choke you plan on using for the majority of your waterfowl hunts. I have heard that you might need to change out your affter market choke if you plan on shooting blackclouds. I have heard from numerous people about how they blew their choke out of the barrel which messed up the expensive choke tube and ruined the barrel because the grooves were stripped. but that has never happend to me even though i dont shoot black clouds every day. I find it hard to pay that much money for a box of shells but i will splurge for them whenever i have a little extra cash burning a hole in my pocket. |

Some of this comes from one of my previous posts for "Whats everyones choice for Ammo for Waterfowl!?!?" I've got a couple of friends that have extended range Patternmasters and they have worked great for the times when the birds just wont work in close or you're pass shooting. If you do most of your shooting over decoys under 35 yards you might be over choked with the extended range though. If you shoot any of the Federal Blackcloud with the Flitecontrol wad you don't want to use the Patternmasters because of the "nubs". The "nubs" slow the wad down and cause the shot to separate too early from the shot cup which totally defeats the purpose and function of the Flitecontrol wad. As far as blowing your choke out of your barrel using Blackcloud and aftermarket tubes (I'm assuming you're referring to Patternmasters?)...this sounds like a different issue than the interaction between the choke and the Flitecontrol wad. _x000D_ _x000D_ As for me I have a extended Carlson's modified tube for my Franchi which my girlfriend shoots and I'm currently just using the factory modified tube in my Vinci. To really know what choke to shoot you should get out and pattern the gun and load you intend to shoot. Different guns will pattern differently even when the same exact choke tube is used. My Franchi and my dad's Beretta accept the same tubes and all of our tubes pattern differently when used in each of the guns. I do all of my waterfowl shooting with Blackcloud because, when you can get it as cheap as I do, I would be crazy not to! FowlNation - Become part of the nation and help it grow |

I just listened to episode 29 of The Predator Hunting Talkcast and they were talking with Scott Carlson of Carlson's Choke Tubes. The interview was obviously geared toward predator hunting but they also talk about chokes in general and it was very informative. I have a xtnd range patternmaster in my SX2. Really good for those long shots and later in the season. Not too good for huntin flooded timber though. If i had it to over again i would have just stuck with the factory mod. |

Early season for ducks I usually stick with the factory Mod, but I bought an extended range patternmaster for my Nova last fall and I love using it to hunt geese... I can't wait to try it out on the snow geese this spring! |

Just remember, whatever choke you decide on, make sure you pattern it with a few different types of ammo before hunting with it. Your chances of hitting your target are far greater if you do. |

Ive always been a Mod fan. This last year when i switch to a benelli SB2 I bought one of the new Jeff Foiles Strait meat chokes and love it. Its a leathal combo and then add black cloud to the party and its the best..Highly recommended. FowlNation ProStaff / HEVI-SHOT Prostaff |

I STRONGLY agree with the others who pointed out patterning. Spend the time and extra money this summer patterning different chokes and different loads. Vary your range so you know the effect of the distance versus load/pattern combinations. If you know your set up and how it shoots you will end up chasing fewer cripples. |

The only shotgun I own that doesn't have a Briley hangin out the end of it is my Benelli which I shoot the factory modified. BPS 10 has Briley light mod, all 870s(5) have a light mod that I swap between and will shoot #3 or #4s great. If it appears the shots are going to be longer I put a mod Briley in them. I had my rounds with the patternmaster and will NEVER do it again. I have never had any problems with Kicks, shot quite a few of them in friends guns and they do what there supposed to. Briley are hard to beat and cost about $20 bucks less than Kicks. The main thing to do before buying any is to pattern you gun with the factory chokes. They generally provide good patterns. |

I shoot a patternmaster all year and love it... I shoot the ext range. I believe there is a common misconception with the patternmaster though, everyone thinks it makes your pattern ridiculously tight but in all reality at 30 yards it holds just a bit of a better pattern than my modified, the difference is it holds that consistent pattern at much longer ranges, I have shot it on paper from 20 30 40 and 50. Another big plus is the elimination of shot string it throws all your shot in the idea to keep it consistently flat. So is it an awesome long range choke? yes. Is it a very good decoy choke? I think so... I have no problem ripping ducks and geese all year with it, in my opinion it has been the best investment ive made for my gun. As a matter of fact I went out and shot my 6 ducks this morning with it (all ducks over the decoys) and didnt tear up the meat at all and had no crip's. I wouldnt use any other choke! If you're looking for something to reach out there and touch some birds and a pattern that is held at a ridiculous tightness I would try the "strait heat" by foiles migrators, that choke is a goose rippin machine... patterns are ridiculous. |

So far I'm sold on my Hevi Shot waterfowl chokes in mid range and extended range. Can't beat the price for two and the results I've had so far on the pattern boards using Hevi Metal and Hevi Shot tell me I'm good to go for the season. |

i also bought the hevi shot combo pack and have had good luck with both the mid and extended range in my sx3. but my experience with them so far is that the ER is a little to intense over decoys. my brother in law used my mid range in his sx2 and he was folding ducks at 35-40 yards with very few cripples. |

I just got a patternmaster extended range for my SuperNova. I used it a few times on some geese this early goose season this year and absolutly destroyed the geese at 60+ yards! I loved it, cant wait to see what it does on the late season birds. |
